What you need to know about the smoke alarm legislation.

From 1 January 2027, Queensland legislation requires:

• Photoelectric smoke alarms compliant with AS 3786-2014.
• Alarms must not contain ionisation sensors.
• Alarms must be less than 10 years old and functional when tested.
• Interconnected alarms that activate simultaneously.

Smoke alarms must be installed on each storey:

• In each bedroom.
• In hallways connecting bedrooms and other parts of the dwelling.
• If no hallway exists, between the bedrooms and other parts of the storey.
• At least one smoke alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling if no bedrooms are present on a storey.

Power Source Requirements:

• Hardwired or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery, or a combination of both.
